Federal Officer Fatally Shoots Person on D.C. Subway Platform

A federal officer fatally shot a person Wednesday evening during an encounter on a subway platform at the Metro Center station in Washington, the authorities said.

Ian Jannetta, a spokesman with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, said that the shooting happened at 6:30 p.m. on the Red Line platform and that the officer was injured during the episode. He declined to comment further, referring questions to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The Metro police said in a statement that it had “responded to assist another agency” with a police shooting but declined to comment further. It was unclear what agency the federal officer works for.

Trains were bypassing the Metro Center station as the authorities investigated, and Red Line trains were running on a single track.

The shooting came five days after an F.B.I. special agent was found not guilty of attempted murder after shooting a passenger while riding on a Red Line train in 2020, according to CNN.
